It's somewhat rare, but sometimes you can strike SEO-gold by looking at misspellings. I wrote about this topic previously in a posting about the Every Day with Rachael Ray site for which I was doing SEO work. More recently, I stumbled on to a phrase that is often misspelled, searched for frequently, and not at all competitive. There isn't much more that I could ask for!
The search phrase in this case is search engine optimization specalist. Did you notice that the last word in that phrase is misspelled? Despite the misspelling, the phrase was searched for a thousand times in October 2005 according to Overture's Search Suggestion tool. At the same time, a quick peek on Google reveals that this phrase has very little competition. By very little, I mean that Google only returns 37,000 matching pages which is great in the SEO world where a term isn't considered competitive until there are around 20,000,000 matches. Compare the 37,000 matches to the over 3,000,000 matches that Google returns for the proper spelling of specialist.
In my opinion, anyone selling SEO services that isn't targeting this word is missing out on some easy business. Sure there's a the potential that a client will not hire you purely because he thinks you can't properly spell search engine optimization specialist, but I think it would be worth the very small risk. The take-away here is that you should look at your business and come up with the terms that people are likely to spell incorrectly. Then find a way to target those words especially if your competitors haven't already done so.
