The prizes are usually too small and the competition too great to make them worth putting a real effort in to winning them. However, I often create an entry just to watch how my entry moves around in search engine results. Call it a hobby. I just caught wind of a debate going on about whether search engine optimization (SEO) is rocket science or not. Apparently, Dave Pasternack of Did-It thinks it isn't and DMNews recently published a follow-up interview with him about the backlash he received. The kind of reaction he received is not unexpected really. Anyone who is told that their profession could be done by monkeys (reading between the lines of Dave's comments here) is going to be offended. Any other targeted phrase and I'd doubt my own SEO skills, but since I'm up against people that do SEO for a living, I don't feel so bad.
